2016 Theo Marks Stakes an Option for Clearly Innocent

August 16th, 2016

Clearly Innocent is poised to be set on a short campaign through the forthcoming 2016 Spring Carnival that could be geared towards a race like the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) at Rosehill Gardens on September 10th.

Clearly Innocent has been the stable star for Scone-based Greg Bennett throughout his entire racing career so far; posting seven wins and a minor through only nine competitive appearances since debuting in August last year.

Jockey Tommy Berry believes that connections will want to keep talented gelding Clearly Innocent to a light Spring Carnival campaign, with a view towards major targets during the 2016 edition of the Autumn Carnival; underlining a race like the Theo Marks Stakes as a possible target.

“I think he’s a Group 1 horse, he’s always shown that,” Berry told Racing Ahead.

“He’s only ever stretched out to 1400m but he feels like he’ll stretch out to a mile and even further.

“There’s obviously great targets for him.

“I think they’ve all got the autumn targeted for him and he’ll just have a light spring.

“I think he’s a very impressive horse, he’s untapped at the moment and he keeps improving.”

Clearly Innocent returned to the paddock after a luckless run for sixth in the TAB Highway Handicap (1100m) on December 5th, and had clearly taken plenty of benefit from his time away from racing when resuming for a comfortable win in the Mudgee Florist BM65 (1200m) on February 7th.

Repeating the dose in the Nowra Country Championship Qualifier (1400m) on February 21st, the Not A Single Doubt gelding continued his winning run of form through the Segenhoe Stud BM70 (1100m) on March 22nd before claiming undoubtedly his most impressive win to date in the Country Championship Final (1400m) at Randwick on Day 1 of The Championships.

Having returned to the paddock after posting a maiden black type win in the Listed Luskin Star Stakes (1300m) on May 14th, a plan and first point of call is yet to be confirmed for Clearly Innocent this season.
