Winx Primed for First Up Success in 2015 Theo Marks Stakes

September 8th, 2015

Winx was a typically strong and consistent performer for Chris Waller through her recent autumn and winter campaign, and the Rosehill Gardens-based trainer has revealed the mare is in great condition ahead of her competitive return in Saturday’s Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1400m).

Winx has finished outside the first three only a handful of times through her 12 career starts so far; producing six exceptional wins and three minors, highlighted by a crushing victory in the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m) last time out on May 30th.

Revealing Saturday will figure as the Launchpad for a Spring Carnival campaign geared towards the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) on October 2nd, Waller told The Daily Telegraph the daughter of Redoute’s Choice has grown in size in her time away from racing and will be hard to beat in the 2015 Theo Marks Stakes.

“She’s a very good horse and has come back into the stable looking very well,” Waller said.

“I think she’s up to an Epsom Handicap and we’ll get a good guide this weekend.”

“She had a lot of developing to do as a spring three-year-old but we saw she’d taken the next step during her last campaign.”

“She’s never going to be a big, strong mare but certainly in time she’s strengthened up.”

Taking out a pair of Sydney minors during a brief debut campaign through the 2014 winter, Winx returned in spring for several impressive results; winning the Group 2 Furious Stakes (1200m) before finishing second in each of the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) and Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m).

Needing a couple of runs to find peak condition upon resuming this year, Winx returned to the winner’s circle in the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) on March 14th before running fifth in the Group 2 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) and a close second in the Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m).

Chasing maiden Group 1 success with the filly, Waller elected to travel north for the winter carnival and was rewarded for the decision when Winx won the Group 3 Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m) before her impressive Queensland Oaks triumph.

The 2015 Theo Mark Stakes final field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday.
