Laser Hawk Confirmed for 2014 Theo Marks Stakes

September 11th, 2014

Forced into the spelling paddock for close to 18 months following a string of unfortunate injuries, trainer Joe Pride has confirmed Group 1 winner Laser Hawk will line up in this weekend’s Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens.

A standout performer in each of his preparations prior to his injuries, Laser Hawk returned to the races in the Group 2 Missile Stakes (1200m) on August 9th, and while beating only a single runner home, pleased his trainer.

Scratched from the final fields of two proceeding races as a result of heavy rain in the days leading in, Pride told Sky Racing HQ the Artie Schiller gelding will have to take his place this weekend if any chance of returning to the highest level of Australian racing through the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival.

“I have pulled him out of two heavy tracks recently and we have to get on our bike soon and have a run,” Pride said.

“I’d say that he would go around this week regardless, but hopefully the sunny weather gets us more onto a slow track or a heavy.”

Securing a commendable total of four wins and three minor places from just ten competitive starts so far, Laser Hawk immediately stamped his claims as one to watch upon debuting to racing in the spring of 2011; comfortably winning both race starts.

Returning to racing in career-best form in 2012, Laser Hawk won a minor over 1500m first-up before placing third in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) and winning the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) most notably in March.

Returning to the paddock after finishing third in the Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) in April, the gelding out of High Heels appeared on track for another memorable campaign through 2013 when finishing second in the Group 3 Newcastle Newmarket Handicap (1400m), but pulled a tendon during the running of the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) on April 6th.
